GlobeMed at the University of Denver is one of 50 GlobeMed chapters across the the United States. Each university chapter is partnered with a grassroots health organization and works one-on-one with them on community health projects.
We partner with Buddhism for Social Development Action (or BSDA) in Kampong Cham, Cambodia. BSDA is an organization which was started by Buddhist monks, and envisions a society where people are empowered to fully exercise their potential to live in dignity, peace, and free of poverty.
GlobeMed at the University of Denver aims to promote global health equity and social justice by empowering the members of the communities with which we work.
Our chapter was started in September 2011 and has been growing strong ever since then. Since our inception, we have had two main focuses. First, we work hard to fund-raise for our partners in Cambodia, sponsoring events on the DU campus all year, as well as pursuing other sources, such as gifts from businesses an individuals. Second, we also maintain a strong focus on creating awareness for global health equality. GlobeMed has developed a comprehensive set of programs to educate, enable, and inspire students like us to understand growing inequities in global health, and act to make an impact alongside grassroots health organizations. It’s our goal to share that knowledge with our community.
Our chapter meets weekly. We discuss how we can best work to accomplish both of those goals, and discuss current issues related to heath equity. Each summer, a small group from our chapter (the GROW team) travels to Cambodia to meet with our partners, discussing how we can improve the relationship and best help them.
Recently we’ve seen fantastic growth. In 2014-2015, our chapter was composed of more than 40 members with a wide variety of majors, backgrounds, and opinions. We were able to quintuple or fundraising efforts over the previous year.
